Minister of National Integration of Brazil visited NIED
On the 5th of July, Mr. Fernando Bezerra Coelho, the Minister of National Integration of Brazil visited NIED headquarters in Tsukuba accompanied by Mr. Humberto de Azevedo Viana, the National Secretary for Civil Defense and others. They made a courtesy visit to the President of NIED, Dr. Yoshimitsu Okada after attending the World Ministerial Conference on Disaster Reduction in Tohoku which was held on the 3rd and 4th of July.
In the beginning, the introduction of NIED's organization and conducted research were presented by the President Dr. Okada. After that, Dr. Maesaka of the Storm, Flood and Landslide Research Unit introduced the Multi-Parameter Radar at its Data Analysis Room. Then, Dr. Pulido of the Earthquake and Volcano Research Unit introduced the Seismograph Networks of NIED at the Earthquake and Volcano Data Center. Finally, at the Large-scale Rainfall Simulator, the Minister Mr. Coelho and the delegates were not only introduced the facility by Dr. Ishizawa of the Storm, Flood and Landslide Research Unit, but also experienced the actual heavy rainfall of 200ml per hour.
In Brazil, there are lots of floods and landslide disasters and they are the main concerns of the Brazilian people. We have received a lot of questions from the Minister Mr. Coelho and the visiting time exceeded.
