Outline and History

NIED (National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience) aims to protect people's lives and properties from natural disasters and to prepare society to be resilient to natural disasters, through research on disasters caused by earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, landslides, meteorological changes, snow and ice damages.

1963.4 The NRCDP (National Research Center for Disaster Prevention) was established in Tokyo.
1964.12 Institute of Snow and Ice Studies was located in Nagaoka.
1965.8 Marine Observation Tower was completed in Hiratsuka.
1967.6 Strong Motion Earthquake Observation Council was established.
1967.7 Hiratsuka Branch was located.
1969.10 Shinjo Branch was located.
1970.6 Large-scale Earthquake Simulator was constructed (The first research facility in Tsukuba Science City.)
1973.3 Iwatsuki Crustal Activity Observatory was constructed.
1974.3 Large-scale Rainfall Simulator was constructed.
1978.4 Headquarters moved from Tokyo to Tsukuba Science City.
1984.3 Kanto and Tokai Crustal Activity Observation Network was formed.
1990.6 NRCDP was reorganized into National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED).
1995.1 The Kobe Earthquake occured.
1996.6 K-NET(Kyoshin-Net)started operation.
1997.3 Cryospheric Environment Simulator was constructed in Shinjo.
1997.4 Hi-net(High Sensitivity Seismograph Network, KiK-net(Kiban Kyoshin-net) and F-net(Broadband Seismograph Network) were set up nationwide.
1999.4 Reorganization (National Information Center for Earthquakes and Disasters was constructed.)
2001.4 Independent Administrative Institution, National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention was established. Earthquake Disaster Mitigation Research Center (EDM) was transferred from RIKEN to NIED.
2002.10 Kawasaki Laboratory was located as the branch of EDM.
2003.4 EDM was moved from Miki city to Kobe city.
2004.10 Hyogo Earthquake Engineering Research Center was established in Miki city.
2005.3 3-D Full-Scale Earthquake Testing Facility (E-Defense) was constructed in Miki city.
2006.4 Research Departments were reorganized into 3 Research Departments and 3 Centers.
2007.3 Kawasaki Laboratory was closed down.
2008.3 Marine observation tower at hiratsuka experimental site was closed down.
2011.3 The East Japan Earthquake occured.
Earthquake Disaster Mitigation Research Center(EDM) was closed down.
2011.4 Research Departments were reorganized into 3 Research Departments.
2013.4 Snow and Ice Research Center was reorganized. Shinjo Branch changed to "Shinjo Cryospheric Environment Laboratory".
2015.4 The status of NIED changed from Independent Administrative Agency to National Research and Development Agency.
2016.4 Reorganized.
