Department of Catastrophic Geohazard Research
Department of Catastrophic Geohazard Research observes, predicts, and disseminates disaster events such as the Nankai Trough Earthquakes, the Tokyo Metropolitan Near-field Earthquake, and large-scale volcanic eruptions, which have a tremendous impact on the safety of citizens and social economy in Japan, and conducts research measures to protect human lives and minimize damage.
Research Division for Earthquake, Tsunami and Multi-disasters
Research Division for Earthquake, Tsunami and Multi-disasters is conducting R&D to grasp and estimate the seismic source information in real-time and sequentially, seismic motion and overall picture of tsunamis based on earthquake and tsunami observation data from land and sea, as well as research and development on hazard and risk assessment based on scientific knowledge of earthquakes, tsunamis and compound disasters that contributes to decision-making on countermeasures.
Research Division for Earthquake and Tsunami Generation Mechanisms
Research Division for Earthquake and Tsunami Generation Mechanisms is conducting R&D to elucidate the physical processes of the occurrence and progression of large earthquakes and creates earthquake generation scenarios through the analysis of observation data, numerical simulations, giant rock friction experiments, and other methods.
Research Division for Volcanic Disasters
Based on observation data from the Fundamental Volcano Observation Network (V-net), Research Division for Volcanic Disasters is advancing research and technological development in areas such as eruption disaster prediction, simulation, remote sensing, and monitoring.
Center for Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano Observation Research
Center for Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano Observation Research operates a nationwide integrated earthquake, tsunami and volcanic observation network that covers both land and sea, and conducts research based on observation data.
Center for Volcano Research Promotion
As a hub for volcano disaster research in Japan, Center for Volcano Research Promotion is conducting R&D in areas such as observation, simulation, risk assessment and information dissemination, including the construction of a system for sharing of volcanic observation data (JVDN system).
