Prof. Demberel, Scientific Secretary of the Research Center for Astronomy and Geophysics of Mongolian Academy of Sciences (RCAG MAS) visited NIED
On January 19th, Prof. Demberel, Scientific Secretary of RCAG MAS, visited NIED accompanied by Dr. Ulziibat, Head of the Seismological Department of RCAG MAS, Dr. Ninjgarav, Associate Professor of the Geotechnical Engineering, Deputy Director of School of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, and Prof. Ichihashi, Visiting Professor of the International Center for Urban Safety Engineering(ICUS), Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo and also former Ambassador to Mongolia.
Followed by the introduction of NIED given by Dr. Okada, the president of NIED, the delegates visited Earthquake Data Center with the guide of Dr. Hori, the Director of the Earthquake Research Department. After that, Dr. Minowa introduced the Large-scale Earthquake Simulator. The delegates have also visited the Large-scale Rainfall Simulator at the end of the tour.
Dr. Okada, Prof. Demberel and Prof. Ichihashi have met each other at the Asian Science and Technology Forum which was held in Ulaanbaatar, in March, 2007. The Forum was co-organized by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and NIED to mitigate earthquake disasters in Mongolia. This was the second time to see each other since then. In Ulaanbaatar, some active faults exist nearby, so that disaster mitigation towards earthquake is one of the biggest issues. Prof. Demberel invited NIED researchers, as a leading experts on earthquake prediction study in Japan and in the World, to participate in the research activities in Mongolia. Mongolian delegates emphasized the importance of the RCAG and NIED cooperation in future on monitoring of seismic activity, prediction of strong earthquakes at some active faults exist nearby, and seismic hazard assessment of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The delegates were very enthusiastic throughout the tour.
