Based on our 60 years of research experience, NIED conducts research and development that contributes to the safety and security of our nation, as a national research and development agency, with an overlooking view of current and future issues related to disaster risk reduction in Japan.

Department of Catastrophic Geohazard Research

Department of Catastrophic Geohazard Research observes, predicts, and disseminates disaster events such as the Nankai Trough Earthquakes, the Tokyo Metropolitan Near-field Earthquake, and large-scale volcanic eruptions, which have a tremendous impact on the safety of citizens and social economy in Japan, and conducts research measures to protect human lives and minimize damage.

Department of Urban Disaster Resilience Engineering

Department of Urban Disaster Resilience Engineering studies the mechanisms of social infrastructure that can withstand earthquakes and other severe disasters, and research measures to develop and realize sustainable regional areas and functions that allow people to live safely and securely.

Department of Extreme Weather Disaster Research

Department of Extreme Weather Disaster Research studies measures to effectively prevent and mitigate disasters such as extreme heavy rains, floods, landslides, violent winds, heat waves, snowstorms, and cold waves, which occur frequently due to global warming and are increasing in damage and frequency every year.

Department of Transdisciplinary Research in Disaster Risk Reduction

Department of Transdisciplinary Research in Disaster Risk Reduction takes a comprehensive view of the social problems facing Japan, such as super-aging population, declining birthrate, population decline, and information sophistication and security, and conducts transdisciplinary research on effective measures for prevention, emergency response, and recovery/reconstruction of various disasters that threaten human existence.
