5.Objectives of Symposium
- The earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku on March 11, 2011 produced devastating tremors and a tsunami that led to the loss and missing of approximately 20,000 precious lives, along with a great loss of infrastructure and assets. Recovery and reconstruction of areas affected by the disaster are expected to take a very long time.
- Japan is extremely grateful for the generous response of the international community to the Great East Japan Earthquake, and continues to benefit from the efforts of many other countries cooperating and collaborating in the recovery and reconstruction work, enhanced by the government's "open reconstruction" policy.
- The International Symposium aimed to provide an opportunity to share experiences and lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake and of earthquake disasters in Indonesia, the Philippines, Peru, and Chile, where the SATREPS projects are going on. It also aimed to facilitate the discussion of strategies and policies to enhance earthquake and tsunami disaster prevention capabilities worldwide.
