Film description:
National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) focuses on the “Science for Resilience”. Disaster resilience can be promoted through forecast, prevention, response and recovery. Since the establishment of NIED in 1963, the institution has been responsible for building a framework for disaster risk reduction to all types of natural hazards. NIED promotes a holistic approach towards disaster resilience through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research on methods to prepare for and respond to disasters.
The drive behind NIED to become Japan’s leading innovation hub for disaster resilience is emphasized by its unique large-scale experimental facilities and the implementation of a sophisticated observation network. The cutting-edge facilities and systems are utilized to examine and monitor various types of natural hazards, including earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic eruptions, torrential rain and snow.
As the frequency and intensity of disasters is projected to increase in the near future,
NIED will continue to promote research and development towards a society more disaster resilient
