IRDR (Integrated Research on Disaster Risk) Scientific Committee, which met on October 19, approved the establishment of ICoE (International Center of Excellence) Japan proposed by IRDR Japan National Committee (Japan NC). Japan NC was established in 2009 as a subsidiary committee of Science Council of Japan (SCJ) and has expressed an interest to establish ICoE Japan since May this year,
Japan NC and Japan Hub of Disaster Resilience Partners (JHoP) is a basis of ICoE Japan, which is composed of 15 partners from universities, research institutions including NIED and general associations involved in disaster resilience in Japan.
The purpose of the establishment of ICoE Japan is further strengthening coherence between disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) to secure sustainable development through international cooperation introducing the Online Synthesis System for Sustainability and Resilience (OSS-SR) and Facilitators. The OSS-SR is an information/knowledge base of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary science to support decision making by on-site stakeholders. Facilitators are to bridge stakeholders and consilience of knowledge in DRR, CCA, and sustainable development through the OSS-SR as catalysts.
The overall management of ICoE Japan will be conducted by NIED, the ICoE Host Institution, represented by the President Dr. Haruo HAYASHI.
