H.E. Mr. HRASTIĆ, Croatian Ambassador, impressed by E-Defense
On October 29, His Excellency Mr. Dražen HRASTIĆ, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Japan, visited the Three-Dimensional Full-Scale Earthquake Testing Facility, so-called E-Defense, accompanied by Dr. HAYASHI, President of NIED.
Dr. KAJIWARA, Director-General of Hyogo Earthquake Engineering Research Center and his colleagues gave lectures and a through tour of E-Defense which includes the world’s largest 300m2 3D shake table and its high-pressurized-fluid actuation system (*1). On the table, there was still a specimen used for verification tests of seismically reinforced joints along water piping in the past days; a large container filled with soil and water pipes with reinforced and unreinforced joints embedded in the soil. Beneath the table can be found state-of-the-art technology enabling to produce complicated but accurate 3D shaking motion, which has inspired him.
NIED has supported Croatia toward Build Back Better (BBB) from two large-scale earthquakes hit in 2020 since early this year (*2). Both have agreed to strengthen collaboration from knowledge sharing via webinar and to pursue longer-term cooperation such as joint-research and personnel exchanges.
