Opening of GNS Science’s Tokyo Office is Expected to Strengthen Partnership with NIED
GNS Science, a New Zealand research institute aiming to elucidate the earth systems including natural hazards, announced at an event held in Tokyo on April 21 that GNS Science's first overseas office in Tokyo has been established.
National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) and GNS Science have had a long history of research exchanges on seismic hazard assessment through the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) framework and the annual workshops. Dr. HAYASHI Haruo, President of NIED, was invited to the ceremony to celebrate the launch of the new initiatives.
At the event, Right Honorable Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand expressed her welcome for the initiatives, and Mr. Ian Simpson, Chief Executive of GNS Science noted in his speech that disaster research is a very important area of study for GNS Science, and that NIED is an important partner for them.
Later that same day, Mr. Simpson discussed NIED's earthquake and tsunami observations and applications with NIED researchers.
The opening of the GNS Science’s Tokyo office is expected to further promote collaboration between the two institutes.
