Overseas Trainees Visited NIED to Deepen Their Understanding of Earthquake Engineering
NIED welcomed a group of trainees of “International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (IISEE) Training Course” organized by the Building Research Institute (BRI) in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on 27 April.
The trainees are mainly composed of researchers and engineers specializing in seismology, earthquake engineering and tsunami disaster mitigation. Sixteen of them (from El Salvador, Fiji, Indonesia, Philippines, Algeria, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Ghana, Peru, and Timor-Leste) visited the large-scale earthquake simulator in person while three (from Tonga and Colombia), who could not come to Japan due to COVID19 restrictions, participated in online lectures.
Hybrid lectures were given by Dr. ASANO Youichi, Network Center for Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano, about NIED’s observation network for earthquake, tsunami and volcano (MOWLAS), and then followed by Dr. TABATA Kentaro and Dr. FUJIWARA Jun, Earthquake Disaster Mitigation Research Division, who explained about their division's research work including shaking-table tests. During the Q&A session, the inspired trainees raised many technical questions, showing their high interest in the lectures.
