Announcement
The 2nd Joint Workshop with National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction of Taiwan (NCDR) has strengthened research cooperation and development
The 2nd Workshop between National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction of Taiwan (NCDR) and National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience of Japan (NIED) was held on 20 March 2023 at NIED HQ in Tsukuba.
In the opening remarks of the workshop, Dr. Haruo HAYASHI, NIED President, expressed his great appreciation for the face-to-face reunion of NIED and NCDR after the 1st Joint-Workshop in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also added that it is NIED's turn to visit NCDR for the FY2023 workshop. In response to his remarks, Dr. Hongey CHEN, NCDR President, expressed his pleasure to be able to visit NIED after a long time and his gratitude for what Dr. HAYASHI has done for NCDR in past years.
The 2nd Workshop included three thematic sessions; (1) Information and Social Science, (2) Landslide and Hydrology, and (3) Meteorology, which involved tens of researchers from both organizations.
Some areas of upcoming collaboration in 2023-24 identified during the workshop include collaborative research areas and the 3rd Joint Workshop. Research areas of common interest to be discussed further include informatics for risk communication and hydro-meteorology using radar. The 3rd “face-to-face” Joint Workshop was proposed by NCDR to be held in Taipei in Autumn 2023, possibly accompanied by field trips in geoscience or post-disaster recovery sites. Meanwhile, both will hold online meetings and keep communication to collaborate further.
NCDR delegation also visited the monitor room of the NIED’s Network Center for Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano guided by Dr. Shin AOI and the Multi-Parameter Radar Analysis Room by Dr. Satoshi IIZUKA.
