NIED welcomes Indonesian mission of key disaster managers
NIED received a delegation from Indonesia on 9 November 2023 headed by Deputy for Prevention Dra. Prasinta Dewi of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) consisting a total of 29 members from BNPB, Metrological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), and Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
The delegation was welcomed by NIED Executive Vice President Takayuki ASO, followed by three presentations on “Overview of SIP4D and ISUT: Disaster information sharing platform ~key function for disaster response support~” by Special Researcher, Satoru YUSA of Disaster Information Research Division, “Monitoring of River Flow Utilizing High-Sensitivity Seismometers (NIED Hi-net)” by Chief Expert Researcher, Shakti P.C. of Storm, Flood and Landslide Research Division, and “Volcanic Research in NIED” by Director-General Eisuke FUJITA of Volcano Disaster Resilience Research Division.
From the Indonesian side, Head of Operations Control Center, Bambang Surya Putra shared an overview of DRR projects that aim to increase the preparedness of the central government and selected local governments to natural hazards by capacity building and developing early warning services to the public.
After the presentation session, the delegation visited the Large-scale Rainfall Simulator. Following the introduction of the facility and past/ongoing experiments by Deputy Director Naoki SAKAI of Storm, Flood, and Landslide Research Division, simulation of heavy rainfall was demonstrated.
After the morning program, NIED guided the delegation to the Ibaraki Prefectural Office to learn about disaster preparedness and emergency operations of the prefectural government. Division Head, Kenji NAKAHARA of the Disaster Prevention and Crisis Management Division, presented on the disaster preparatory measures and emergency operation of the Ibaraki Prefectural Government at the Disaster Countermeasures Headquarter, followed by the visits to Disaster Countermeasures Room, and Information Distribution and Transmission Room.
During the Q&A session, many questions were raised by the delegates including how quickly the Ibaraki Prefectural Government is able to set up the Disaster Countermeasures Headquarter, the division of roles among the central government, prefectural governments and local municipalities, and other stakeholders.
The technical visit was a part of the World Bank project, “Indonesia Disaster Resilience Initiatives Project (IDRIP).”
