NIED Hosts the GEOMME (*) Course 2023
* GEOMME: The international partnership for Climate-induced geohazards mitigation, management, and education in Japan, Republic of Korea, and Norway
During November 6-17, 2023, researchers and students from Japan (Niigata University, Hirosaki University, NIED), Republic of Korea (KAIST, GWNU, KIGAM), and Norway (NGI, UiT, NTNU) jointly studied through lectures on landslide, snow storm, avalanche, tsunami, rainfall hazards and risks over large spatial scales at Niigata University (week 1), and fieldwork in several key areas prone to natural disasters in the Tohoku region (week 2).
During week 2, participants visited landslide area, avalanche prone area, tsunami seawall, tsunami evacuation tower, volcanoes (Mt. Azumayama, Mt. Adatarayama, Mt. Bandaisan), etc., where they learned about impacts and countermeasures against natural hazardsin Japan. Also, they visited NIED’s Shinjo Cryospheric Environment Laboratory and toured the Cryospheric Environment Simulator, which is the only experimental facility in the world that is capable of simulating snow with near natural crystal shape.
This course concluded with a workshop at NIED Headquarters on the last day, where the key learnings from the course were summarized and planning for the next year activities was discussed. It is hoped that this seminar will encourage future researchers from the three countries to address our common societal needs against disasters.

Comprehensive control measures have been implemented by the government.

Snow and avalanche countermeasure is a common interest of Japan, Korea, and Norway.
