NIED Welcomes JICA Trainees from the Republic of Zambia
On December 1, NIED welcomed a total of 4 trainees from the Republic of Zambia in the JICA training for the project entitled “Project for Improvement of Bridge Maintenance Capability Building in Zambia.” The trainees were CEO and senior managers from the Road Development Agency (RDA) in Zambia. The trainees were able to learn about the activities of NIED including experiments conducted at the Large-scale Rainfall Simulator Facility, with the aim to gain knowledge about disaster response, budget policy, and implementation systems for crisis management in Japan.
The trainees first received an overview of NIED and its international cooperation activities from Dr. Shohei Matsuura, Deputy Director General of the International Affairs Division. They then visited the Large-scale Rainfall Simulator and received a detailed explanation from Dr. Tomohiro ISHIZAWA of the Storm, Flood and Landslide Research Division, about experiments to simulate and analyze the relationship between various rainfall types and the magnitude of landslides utilizing this facility. The enthusiastic trainees asked questions and showed their great interest in the experiments and the facility, especially after experiencing the powerful 300 mm downpour rain.
