NIED takes part in DRR workshop, “Harnessing Science, Technology and Innovation for Disaster Risk Reduction” held in Manila, Philippines, hosted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Philippines
NIED took part in the workshop, “Harnessing Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for Disaster Risk Reduction” co-organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Republic of the Philippines, the United States of America, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that was held in Manila, Philippines from 29 February to 1 March 2024. The workshop was attended by 49 participants from 14 member countries of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD).
NIED provided one of the keynote speeches entitled, “Role of Science and Technology for Building Disaster Resilience: Case Study from the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience” together with representatives from Austria, Brazil, the Philippines, South Africa, Guinea and the United States. The workshop showcased various STI success stories, including GeoRisk, developed by DOST, that provides a consolidated platform for sharing disaster information for planning disaster risk reduction and management.
NIED also held discussions with the DOST management, including H.E. Renato Solidum Jr, DOST Secretary (Minister), regarding ideas on establishing a STI Platform for DRR under the Japan-ASEAN partnership.
