NIED organizes Japan-Malaysia-Vietnam fact-finding field survey and a joint workshop in Vietnam from March 4th to 9th
From 4-9 March, NIED organized the Japan-Malaysia-Vietnam fact-finding field survey in Vietnam. The objectives of the field survey were to (a) understand current debris flow issues and measures taken in Vietnam, (b) share and compare with situation in Malaysia on debris flow issues and (c) conduct a write-shop to draft a research proposal on SABO/debris flow issues.
On 4 March, a joint workshop was held with participants from the Institute of Geological Sciences (IGS), Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and joined by University of Sciences, Vietnam National University, Institute of Transport Science and Technology (ITST) and Vietnam Hydraulic Construction Institute, Vietnam Academy for Water Resources. From Malaysia, researchers from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) jointed the workshop. Presentations were given by all three countries on the current situations in debris flow management. In the afternoon, the mission members visited the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
From 5-7 March, mission members visited Yen Bai Province where several debris flow sites were observed, including recent disaster areas in Mu Cang Chai District.
On 8 March, the mission conducted a write-shop to brainstorm and determine the research objectives and scope that will later develop into a full-scale research proposal to be implemented by researchers from the three countries.
