GNS Science Researchers Visit NIED
Two researchers from GNS Science, New Zealand’s national research institute, Dr. Stuart Henrys and Dr. Dan Bassett, visited NIED's main campus in Tsukuba on April 10 and Tokyo Office on April 11.
In the morning of the 10th, Dr. Henrys and Dr. Bassett had a discussion with NIED researchers on improving hazard resilience through high-resolution 3D seismic tomography of subduction zones in Japan and New Zealand, and in the afternoon, they visited the facilities related to NIED's earthquake research, including the monitor room of the MOWLAS (a nationwide observation network for earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes over land and sea), K-NET (a nationwide strong-motion seismograph network) observation site, and rock friction testing apparatus.
On the 11th, the location was moved to the NIED Tokyo Office, where researchers from GNS Science, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Earthquake Research Institute, the University of Tokyo (ERI), and NIED participated in a seeding workshop to advance collaborative research on subduction zone structure, earthquakes, and hazards in Japan and New Zealand, with 15 presentations from the three institutions. Further development of research and strengthening of relationships among the four institutions in this field is expected.
