NIED participated in the World Bank’s Understanding Risk Forum 2024 (UR24) that was held Himeji City, Hyogo, Japan from 17 -21 June.
On 17 June, the “Online Knowledge-sharing Session on the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake” was broadcasted live at the forum that reflected on the experiences of NIED in responding to the earthquake event and studies/analysis that have been conducted in the ongoing recovery process. The session was also joined by the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR), Taiwan, that shared their experiences from the Hualien Earthquake that occurred in April 2024.
In the first main plenary session, “Richter Resilience: Advancing Seismic Protection Worldwide” on 18 June, President Kaoru Takara was joined by Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Philippines and Dr. Helen Crowley, Secretary General of the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation to discuss on better ways to understand earthquake risks and to further strengthen measures to cope with earthquake risks, such as through capacity building, data sharing and multi-hazard approach.
In the technical session on “Novel Data, AI, and Disasters,“ organized later in the afternoon, NIED’s Dr. Satomi Kimijima jointed experts from Japan and the United States to discuss on exploring practical ways to utilize novel data sources, AI models and other new technologies to enhance disaster response, mitigation and preparedness.
NIED also displayed its research work at the UR24 Exhibition Booth throughout the forum. The NIED team were able to explain to the participants on the details of the various research activities conducted by NIED.
During the forum, President Takara also had a bilateral meeting with Secretary Solidum of DOST Philippines, to discuss on the idea of ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Platform for DRM.
