MJIIT MDRM alumni’s long-awaited visit to NIED
On August 6, 24 alumni of the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) UTM visited NIED's Tsukuba HQs, where they were briefed by NIED researchers on their latest research activities and toured the NIED facilities.
These alumni were enrolled in the Master of Disaster Risk Management (MDRM) program at MJIIT during the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore were unable to come to Japan for their Japan Attachment programme before graduation.
The alumni first heard a general overview of NIED from Dr. Shohei MATSUURA of International Affairs Division, followed by a lecture on NIED’s disaster information management during emergency response from Mr. Satoru YUSA, Special Researcher of the Disaster Information Research Division, and a lecture on the Business Impact Tool for Area-BCM, one of the research results obtained through the JICA’s SATREPS joint program in Thailand, from Dr. Yohei CHIBA, Special Researcher of Disaster Resilience Research Division.



In addition, the group listened to a presentation on meteorological observation radar by Dr. Satoshi IIZUKA, Director-General of Storm, Flood and Landslide Research Division, and toured NIED's meteorological radar site. After that, they received an explanation of the land and sea observation network for earthquakes and tsunami earthquakes in the network monitoring room from Dr. Takanori MATSUZAWA, Chief Researcher of Network Center for Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano.


Finally, the group toured the Large-scale Rainfall Simulator while listening to an explanation by Dr. Naoki SAKAI, Deputy Director-General of Storm, Flood, and Landslide Research Division, and concluded the tour with an experience of heavy rain reproduced by the simulator.
