NIED co-hosted a Partner Event entitled “Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation in the All-hazards Approach” with Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Philippines, Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR), IRDR ICoE-Coherence Japan, International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) of Tohoku University, Beijing Normal University and Keio University.
At the event, Dr. Kaoru Takara commented that "The Asia-Pacific region has undergone remarkable growth and is rich in diversity, making it important to collaborate with stakeholders from various sectors and expertise in disaster risk reduction and management. In particular, Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) can play a significant role, not only in providing scientific basis for disaster prevention measures, but also in developing human resources and providing a platform for those involved in disaster risk reduction".
More than 200 people attended the event and the panel discussion was very lively with questions from the audience.

At the Marketplace, NIED displayed the activities of the Asian Consortium for Volcanology (ACV). The booth attracted the interest of many visitors as we were one of the only two booths presenting volcanic disaster prevention.

Dr. Takara also had a bilateral meeting with Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol, the Director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) and key researchers to reflect on past collaborations between the two organizations as well as next steps to further enhance partnership through exchange of researchers and joint workshops in the near future.

As the Asia-Pacific region is one of the most disaster-prone regions in the world, and with the security and safety in the region being interdependent, co-learning among Japan and different countries in the Asia-Pacific region will in turn contribute to the strengthening of Japan's resilience to disasters.
