NIED Showcases Research and Expertise at GP2025
NIED participated in the 2025 Global Platform (GP2025), held in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 2 to 6, 2025.
The GP2025, organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), is one of the largest policy forums for disaster risk reduction. It brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including government officials from various countries, international organizations, and representatives from academia, industry, and civil society.
At Thematic Session 4-1, titled "Inclusive and multisectoral approach to effective preparedness," in which NIED was a member of the organizing team. The session focused on strengthening disaster preparedness to protect lives and aim for better recovery. Approximately 200 participants from various countries attended in person (including online participation) engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as the importance of inclusive approaches, investments in preparedness, and the inclusion of socially vulnerable populations.

At the Innovation Platform of GP2025, NIED exhibited one of the world’s largest three-dimensional shaking tables, E-Defense. Using posters, videos, and VR content, NIED introduced the facility’s capabilities and past experiment achievements to the visitors. Throughout the event, around 200 government officials and experts from about 20 countries including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, the Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Guinea, visited our booth. These interactions led to valuable discussions on potential research collaborations and boosted global awareness of E-Defense.

Furthermore, NIED held discussions on “ASEAN Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Platform for Disaster and Climate Risks,” partnering with the ASEAN COSTI subcommittees. The meeting was attended by Dr. Renato Solidum, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Philippines, the Deputy Administrator of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) of the Philippines, representatives from JICA’s Global Environment Department, and Tohoku University.

Through its participation in GP2025, NIED contributed to a deeper understanding among global disaster risk stakeholders on Japan’s technological capabilities and scientific expertise in advancing disaster risk reduction in vulnerable regions across the globe.
