NIED Delegation Visits Singapore to Advance Science and Technology Cooperation with ASEAN on Disaster Resilience
On August 21, 2025, a delegation from the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), Japan, visited the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University. The visit reaffirmed the long-standing collaboration between the two institutes in volcanic disaster research and marked a step toward expanding cooperation into a broader range of research fields.
During the meeting, EOS highlighted its interdisciplinary research on volcanoes, earthquakes, and climatology and meteorology, supported by advanced remote sensing and monitoring technologies, and playing a key role in linking science with policy in the Asia-Pacific region. NIED presented on its international initiatives, highlighting utilization of its advanced experimental facilities, observation networks, and its strategies to build stronger partnerships across the region, with particular focus on ASEAN - envisioning a co-learning partnership to advance disaster resilience across the region.
On August 22, 2025, the delegation visited the Kajima Technical Research Institute Singapore (KaTRIS), established by Kajima Corporation in 2013. KaTRIS conducts research to promote sustainability, productivity, and well-being in the built environment, and functions as a testbed for advanced technologies in robotics, digitalisation, and building systems. The visit provided an opportunity for NIED to learn about these initiatives, including KaTRIS’s efforts to contribute to climate change mitigation through the development of construction materials that help reduce CO₂ emissions. Both sides agreed to continue dialogue and share information on building disaster resilience.
The visits to EOS and KaTRIS highlighted NIED’s efforts to broaden international cooperation in disaster science and technology. Such partnerships are expected to advance cooperation among government, industry, and academia in ASEAN and beyond, contributing to the overall strengthening of disaster resilience in the Asia-Pacific region.
