NIED participates in STS forum and RACC17
On Oct 4, 2025, NIED President Takara participated in the Plenary Session 1: Climate factors and other converging stressors affecting food security, Regional Action on Climate Change (RACC17) as speaker. He highlighted how heatwaves and heavy rainfall affect livelihoods and food production, along with related issues of water, energy, and food self-sufficiency under changing climate and social conditions.
At the event on the same day, “AI for Disaster Preparedness and Response” hosted by National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), he gave a keynote speech entitled, “Meanings of Research and Development: How AI can contribute?” He emphasized the need to integrate explicit and tacit knowledge by using AI and digital tools such as MOWLAS and SIP4D, while addressing data-use challenges and ensuring that expert experience is passed on through sustained R&D to strengthen disaster risk reduction.
On Oct 5, President Takara met with Dr. Leah J. Buendia, Undersecretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Philippine, to discuss Japan–ASEAN collaboration on science, technology, and innovation (STI) in disaster risk reduction and management. He also expressed his expectation for the Government of the Philippines to take a leading role in advancing this agenda as the ASEAN Chair in 2026.
On Oct 6, President Takara attended the concurrent session of the STS forum, “Science and Technology in the Global South”. He noted that many countries in the Global South are striving for sustainable, peaceful, and prosperous societies by engaging with international frameworks through their contributions to the international agendas. He further emphasized the importance of integrating disaster risk reduction with public health, social welfare, while drawing lessons from the successes and failures of developed nations.
