NIED and INGV Sign Memorandum of Cooperation
NIED has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Italy, to strengthen collaboration in disaster-related research on February 12th, 2026.
The MoC was signed by Dr. Kaoru Takara, President of NIED, and Prof. Fabio Florindo, President of INGV in the presence of senior representatives from both institutes, as well as officials from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Embassy of Japan in Italy, and Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).
The two institutes already have had collaborations on volcanology and have records of conducting joint projects and researcher exchanges under the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of Italy on cooperation in Science and Technology since 1992.
The MoC establishes a strengthened framework for cooperation in the fields of seismology, volcanology, and environmental studies. Through the exchange of professional expertise of observation and laboratory data, joint research activities, including laboratory experiments, and personnel exchanges and training, NIED and INGV aim to contribute to reducing disaster risks arising from natural hazards and to the sustainability of the Earth’s environment.
