NIED and BRIN Hold First Annual Workshop in Indonesia
On September 3, 2026, the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) and the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN) held their first annual workshop at BRIN in Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop was followed by a field study visit in the Bandung area on September 4.
The workshop brought together researchers from NIED, BRIN, and other institutions, including the University of Birmingham and the British Geological Survey (BGS). Participants shared research activities on hydrometeorological and geological hazard mechanisms in Indonesia and Japan, alongside advancements in remote sensing, disaster information systems, and social resilience.
Prof. Kaoru Takara, then President of NIED, joined the workshop online and expressed his hope that the annual workshop would become a platform for continued research exchange and collaboration. He also emphasized the importance of sharing disaster-related knowledge and experience between Japan and ASEAN.
In the subsequent session, participants divided into four breakout groups to discuss on: (1) Landslides and Debris Flows, (2) Earthquakes and Tsunamis, (3) Volcanic Hazards, and (4) Social Resilience. The discussions helped identify shared research interests and laid the groundwork for prospective joint initiatives.
On September 4, a technical field visit organized by BRIN was carried out to understand the regional geological risks, local monitoring system and related research activities. The itinerary covered Mount Tangkuban Perahu, the Lembang Fault, and BRIN’s Seismo-Geodetic Station. The field visit also included a stop at the “Setanah, Tak Diam” exhibition, led by BRIN at the Selasar Sunaryo Art Space. Reflecting the idea that “the ground beneath our feet never truly sleeps,” the exhibition explored how societies understand and live with dynamic geological landscapes.
The workshop and field visit served to strengthen mutual understanding and foster closer ties among researchers of both institutes. NIED and BRIN will continue their exchanges and work toward further exploring research collaboration.
